What is involved in a consultation?

A cosmetic surgery consultation helps build rapport between you and your doctor and provides an opportunity to discuss questions you may have regarding your surgery. Some of these questions should include:
  • Are my expectations realistic? If not, why?
  • Are there alternatives to surgery that can provide similar results?
  • What is the doctor's experience?
  • Will I be monitored after surgery and what follow-up care is provided?
This is the time to discuss these and anything else you may feel necessary, including recovery time and altered activity levels after surgery. It's a good idea to write down questions and concerns, as you think of them, prior to the consultation. This way, you'll be prepared in advance for things you may want to talk about without getting home, thumping your forehead, and saying to yourself, "Oh, I wish I'd asked about ____!" You can always phone back, but nothing replaces a face-to-face meeting and scheduling another appointment may delay your procedure.

Even more important than having your questions answered is making sure you really trust your doctor. Remember, you're putting not only your appearance, but many times your life in their hands.
