How do I choose a physician to perform my surgery?

If you're considering cosmetic surgery, the first thing you need is a doctor you can trust. Confirming a doctor's credentials beforehand limits the chances you'll be disappointed or even injured during a procedure.

Confirm Credentials

Verify a physician's medical qualifications first. It doesn't take that much time or effort for such an invaluable step. Certification established by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) indicates a doctor's expertise within a particular medical specialty or subspecialty, and the ABMS' Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program requires periodic peer-reviewed examination. If you're considering a special procedure, you might check with more restrictive organizations as well, such as the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Other Criteria

During your initial consultation, ask the doctor about his or her experience performing the surgery in which you're interested. Study their portfolio of before-and-after patients and ask to read testimonials. Another important criteria is to make sure you and your doctor establish a rapport in which he or she recognizes your needs, and you fully understand all aspects of any procedures performed.
