Is there a lot of downtime involved with cosmetic surgery?

Due to advancements in medical technology and biomaterials, many facial cosmetic surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures that are carried out in their offices and take days - as opposed to weeks - to recover from. These are done using local anesthesia and sedation, and include:

- Face & Neck Lifts
- Eyelid Surgery
- Nose Surgery
- Ear Shaping
- Face & Neck Liposuction
- Lip Enhancement
- Cheek & Chin Implants

Times Change and So Has Cosmetic Surgery

Due to the latest methods and equipment, many traditional procedures are now offered using modified techniques. Some highly skilled cosmetic surgeons perform surgeries that often require only 30 minutes to an hour to perform and just two to three days of recovery time with only minor reduction of activity levels. This means that, unless you have a particularly physical workplace, you might be able to have the procedures done without missing work.

When advanced techniques plus quick recovery equal maximum results, many people find cosmetic surgery a viable option for shaving years off their looks and gaining a new self-confidence unheard of in years past.

How do I choose a physician to perform my surgery?

If you're considering cosmetic surgery, the first thing you need is a doctor you can trust. Confirming a doctor's credentials beforehand limits the chances you'll be disappointed or even injured during a procedure.

Confirm Credentials

Verify a physician's medical qualifications first. It doesn't take that much time or effort for such an invaluable step. Certification established by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) indicates a doctor's expertise within a particular medical specialty or subspecialty, and the ABMS' Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program requires periodic peer-reviewed examination. If you're considering a special procedure, you might check with more restrictive organizations as well, such as the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Other Criteria

During your initial consultation, ask the doctor about his or her experience performing the surgery in which you're interested. Study their portfolio of before-and-after patients and ask to read testimonials. Another important criteria is to make sure you and your doctor establish a rapport in which he or she recognizes your needs, and you fully understand all aspects of any procedures performed.
