Why do I want cosmetic surgery?

The boom in cosmetic surgery - a 700 percent increase in only 10 years - has caused many people to give these procedures more than a second thought. Often the outcome is highly rewarding; sometimes just the opposite occurs. So before undergoing that eyelid lift, chin implant or liposuction treatment, ask yourself - and then answer honestly - why you want cosmetic surgery.

Who Should and Who Should Not

People with depression or serious self-esteem issues most likely will not gain anything from having cosmetic surgery and may even leave treatment unhappier than before. Studies have shown that people most satisfied with their results were those not going through stressful life circumstances (divorce, death, job loss, etc.), could afford the procedure and recovery time, and who understood from the outset that cosmetic procedures will not turn them into a supermodel. An honest, open consultation with your doctor should include your real reasons for wanting surgery and then acknowledging and heeding your doctor's advice.
