Microdermabrasion

This long term describes a relatively simple procedure. "Micro" means small as in microscopic, "derm" means skin, and "abrasion" means gently buffing. So the entire term put together means a treatment for skin that gently buffs the surface of the skin using small (actually tiny) particles to buff the skin.

The microdermabrasion process gently burnishes off old, dead skin cells revealing new, youthful skin underneath. It also slightly massages the skin at the same time, stimulating your natural collagen (the bodily protein responsible for skin strength and elasticity) production.

Aluminum oxide crystals are the particles used to buff the skin, and then a vacuum sucks the dead skin cells off. Microdermabrasion is used to help several skin conditions including reducing hyperpigmentation (patches of skin that are darker than surrounding skin), repairing scars left by acne, restoring sun damaged skin (such as skin with wrinkles, dry skin, or liver spots to name a few), or smoothing out fine lines.

You may have microdermabrasion as an individual procedure, or you may wish to combine it with other rejuvenating treatments such as laser skin resurfacing.

Once you've had microdermabrasion, you need to take care of your skin to retain the rejuvenated look. By moisturizing as well as protecting the newly revealed skin from the damaging effects of the sun, you will enjoy the benefits of microdermabrasion for a long time to come.
