Collagen Injections
Serving Tampa, St. Petersburg, Lakeland, and Sarasota
Aging causes our skin to lose elasticity and fat resulting in the formation of lines, wrinkles and folds in the areas that we use frequently. Although there are many procedures that will dramatically lift and tighten your face, you may want to go with the less invasive options for wrinkle removal.
Injectable fillers are a great option for non-surgical and minimally invasive wrinkle reduction. Today there are many injectables available on the market, but the most popular, longest standing option is collagen. Collagen injections are used to treat these visible signs of aging by replacing some of the natural collagen and fat in the dermis with a surrogate collagen.
Collagen fillers can correct:
- Nasolabial folds (parentheses lines)
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet
- Scars
- Thin or thinning lips
- Wrinkles around the lips (vermilion border wrinkles)
Collagen fillers come in two different types: human or mammal-based. It is important that you not have any allergies to bovine products or lidocaine if you are considering collagen injections. Additionally, you should not be pregnant, nursing or have any autoimmune conditions.
The Collagen Filler Procedure
You and Tampa Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Jasin will discuss the various options available for your procedure. You may choose from a variety of different collagen formulas such as Cosmoderm®, Cosmoplast®, Zyderm® and Zyplast® depending upon the amount of correction you need and the type of collagen you wish to have. With bovine formulas, you will have to undergo an allergy test before your procedure.
On the day of your procedure, Dr. Jasin will disinfect the area to be treated and possibly numb it topically. He will then inject about three to five needles full of a collagen/lidocaine mixture. The lidocaine numbs the injection site while the collagen fills. A basic collagen injection procedure can take anywhere from fifteen minutes to one hour depending on the extent of correction.
Postoperative Considerations
Some minor swelling and sensitivity may occur after treatment. Any scabbing should subside after two to three days. You should be able to return to your normal activities almost immediately following your treatment.
Collagen treatment therapy produces noticeable lightening of scarring and wrinkles that can last up to six months. This is caused by your body slowly metabolizing the injected collagen, returning to its previous state. To maintain your results, you should consider having collagen injections performed every three to six months.
You might also want to consider combining collagen injections with other injectable fillers such as Restylane, Juvéderm or Radiesse.
