BOTOX® Cosmetic
Some of the facial aging we all experience is brought about by the force of gravity pulling at us and by sun damage. But another cause is the facial expressions that we make every day. BOTOX ® relaxes the muscles we use to make facial expressions, softening or eliminating fine lines and wrinkles. BOTOX ® can improve areas around the eyes, forehead, and mouth including:
- Wrinkles across in the forehead
- Frown lines between the brows
- Crow’s feet
- Upper and lower lip lines
- Brow Elevation
- “Gummy Smile”
- Excessive sweating under the arms
BOTOX ® is a purified protein complex which blocks nerve impulses. When injected into the muscle it relaxes the muscle, preventing contractions, and keeping the skin smooth.
The procedure
Tiny injections are made into specific areas of muscle. BOTOX ® only affects the muscle into which it is injected. Surrounding tissue is unaffected, so the results look very natural.
The treatment itself is performed in our office and takes only a few minutes. After about three or four days you’ll notice the effect and the results last from three to five months. The treatment can be repeated as soon as you need it again, and the effects tend to last longer with subsequent treatments.
BOTOX ® treatments can be combined with other procedures, such as laser skin resurfacing and injectable fillers, for an even better and longer-lasting result. Many patients find that BOTOX ® treatments can relieve headaches and reduce excess sweating.
Dr. Jasin has performed thousands of BOTOX ® treatments since 1997. The Jasin Facial Rejuvenation Institute is a National Training Center where other physicians learn the proper technique for BOTOX ® treatment.

WILL DYSPORT® REPLACE BOTOX®?

Dysport® is a botulinum neurotoxin A as is Botox®, but has some characteristics that make it somewhat different than Botox®. Below, outlined are some points comparing and contrasting Botox® Cosmetic to Dysport®:
- Although there may be some slight differences in onset of action, the onset of Dysport® is similar to that of Botox®.
- The duration of effect or longevity of results is similar with Dysport® to Botox®. The Dysport® literature will state it lasts four months, but Botox® will only last three to four months. However, Allergan, the manufacturer of BOTOX® Cosmetic, also can present data that indicates that at four months 53% of the patients studied still had benefit with Botox® Cosmetic versus only 28% with Dysport®. Therefore, each company will be citing studies that are concluding that their product is superior with regard to duration of effect.
- The reconstitution process is different with Dysport® than it is with Botox. The problem Dr. Jasin sees with the reconstitution of Dysport® is that to use it in as many places as one does Botox® that very tiny volumes would need to be injected to maintain cost effectiveness. The problem is that is it very difficult to reliably and consistently inject very tiny amounts accurately. This means that it would not be uncommon for some areas to get more than enough Dysport® where some other areas that are injected may get less than enough Dysport®. This lack of consistency is a weakness of Dysport® in Dr. Jasin’s opinion.
- One unit of Botox® does not equal one unit of Dysport® so the dosing of each is independent of the other.
- Dysport® is no stronger nor more effective than Botox®.
- Dysport® is only indicated for the glabella for now. It is true that Botox® also only has an indication for the glabella, but now to use Botox effectively and safely for various areas of the face has already been worked out with Botox® over a many year period. Botox has tried and true results while some trial and error will be necessary for Dysport® to be used for the same range of applications as Botox®.
- Dr. Jasin’s extensive experience dates back to 1997 with Botox® and he sees no advantage to using an alternate product for the same purpose at this time.
- In Dr. Jasin’s experience, side effects with Botox® have been rare and our patients experience consistent and reliable results with Botox. One characteristic of Dysport® that has been noted is its ability to better diffuse into the tissues due to its smaller molecular size. This increased diffusion can be a double-edged sword. It may allow for more widely distributed benefit and results with Dysport®, but it also might lead to a higher incidence of side effects by weakening adjacent muscles unintentionally.
As it stands right now, the Jasin Facial Rejuvenation Institute is opting to limit ourselves to one neurotoxin product to maintain consistency, safety, and to minimize side effects. Dysport® does not appear to have the same flexibility of treating a broad range of facial areas with a wide range of dosing requirements. We hope this has answered at least some of the questions you may have with regard to the Dysport® product.
