Protruding ears can lead to self-consciousness and withdrawal from social situations for both children and adults. Children with protruding ears face ridicule and teasing in school. Adults often find themselves changing their hairstyles and avoiding social situations in order to hide the appearance of their ears.

Appropriate for children

Ear surgery and reshaping is one of the few cosmetic procedures appropriate for children. In fact, it is easiest to perform on children between the ages of four and six, after the ear is fully developed but while the cartilage is still soft. By correcting protruding ears before a child starts school, anxiety, social, and psychological repercussions can be avoided. Older children, teenagers, and adults can have the surgery successfully, too.

The Ear Surgery Procedure

Otoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia and a sedative. Very young children sometimes require general anesthesia.

  • An incision in made on the back of the ear
  • Skin is removed to expose the cartilage
  • Sutures are used to reshape the cartilage and pull it closer to the head

The ear surgery procedure takes about one to two hours.

Dr. Jasin uses a suture technique for reshaping the ear instead of techniques which involve cutting or sculpting cartilage. This produces a more natural-looking result, and requires less downtime.

Recovery

You will wear a dressing for two or three days. After that a headband is worn 24 hours a day for the first week and at night for two more weeks. Most adults return to work and children return to school in about a week. Activities which may bend the ear should be avoided for about a month.

Otoplasty is a procedure with a very high rate of patient satisfaction which can improve confidence and boost self esteem in both children and adults.
